Neighbourhood Profile: Delbrook

The area is named for the street that runs through it, Delbrook Avenue. Delbrook is divided into 2 sections, Upper Delbrook has a higher elevation towards the mountains North. Delbrook itself is a small area known for its many cul-de-sacs, large lots and post and beam homes that were built in the 50’s & 60’s. Delbrook is on a slight North South Slope providing views from some of the homes towards the North end. It borders Mosquito Creek to the West with its beloved hikes, which contrary to its name is not home to any mosquitos that we have seen! It is steps to Edgemont Village and Westview Plaza and its many amenities. Delbrook has a small commercial area called Delbrook Plaza beside which an older apartment building as well as the newest development of high end Leed certified apartments known as “The Brook”, named “Canada’s Greenest Building” Future development on the current Delbrook Recreation Centre site is in the works, as there are plans for a new multi-million dollar Recreation facility amalgamating both the Delbrook & William Griffin centres on the William Griffin property.

Schools:

Balmoral Junior Secondary School

Balmoral Junior Secondary School was a public junior high school in the Delbrook area. Since the French immersion program left Balmoral Junior Secondary in 2003, that institution saw declining enrollment, to the point where the school itself closed in 2009. The property has since been repurposed to hold the grade 8 and 9 classes of Carson Graham Secondary while that school undergoes a facilities upgrade. The Balmoral building, re-designated as the Carson Graham Secondary Balmoral Campus, will be phased out in 2012 following the completion of the work at Carson Graham.

Red Cross HELP: Health Equipment Loan Program

No one expects to suffer illness or injury that affects their mobility, their independence or dignity — yet it happens to thousands of people in the Lower Mainland every day: the child who needs crutches after a fall from a bike, or a senior who requires a wheelchair, cane or walker after slipping in the bathtub.

Health care reform has reduced the duration of hospitalization, requiring more Canadians to recover from illness, surgery or injury while at home — where equipment to provide comfort and mobility is often not available.

Many people in the Lower Mainland struggle with the tremendous financial burden that illness or injury can bring. The cost of purchasing or renting medical equipment is far beyond the means of many of those who need it most.

HELP – Short Term Loan Service

Offers health equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and bathroom aids, by donation, on a short-term basis to individuals recovering from illness, injury, or surgery.
