Neighbourhood Profile: Norgate

Located South of Marine Drive, just minutes from the Lions Gate Bridge, this area is comprised mainly of one level ranchers built post World War II to accommodate hundreds of workers at the nearby ship yards. These 1 level homes typically have 3 bedrooms and 1 or 2 bathrooms ranging in size from 900 – 1700 square feet. All of these homes were built with radiant in floor heating. These homes were designed to be temporary; however, they have continued to provide an affordable housing option to the North Shore and Norgate is a thriving community today. There are also some more recent larger homes as well as townhouse and apartment complexes in this neighbourhood. Local children attend Norgate elementary.

Norgate has several parks including Norgate Park where many baseball & soccer games are played in the Summer. The North Vancouver Recreation Commission operates the Grant Connell Tennis Centre, named after the local West Vancouver resident (and realtor).

Residents of Norgate enjoy close proximity to Marine Drive and its shops and transportation. Locals enjoy breakfast at the famous “Tomahawk Barbeque” restaurant. Built in 1930 by Chuck Chamberlain, the Tomahawk Barbeque is a log cabin decorated with Native artifacts and other collectibles. West Vancouver resident Bryan Adams was once a dishwasher at the Tomahawk. Recently, Guy Fieri from the tv show “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” recently filmed a segment at the restaurant. Today, the Tomahawk is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
